2015 – <3>

This was the highlight of my trip as of yet! The hall was a jaw-dropping sight to behold – ornate Western-style opera house with the name of composers about each entrance. We had great seats for a mere €7.50 where we sat direct middle and only 30-40 feet from the stage. The music sounded great with the hall’s superb acoustics although the symphony seemed a little disjointed in some passages (I can relate =/). The pianist was a prodigy <3>.^)

I was having fun seeing parallels of the concert to the previous soccer game:

  • (according to …) the high-class vs. low class venue
  • (audience) mostly old white couples vs. lots of drunken Brits
  • (behavior) everyone remained in their own seats vs. crazy chaotic seat switching because of laziness
  • (personnel) fully staffed, two suited ushers per entrance vs. few useless supervisors
  • (venue) highlight of my trip! vs. relatively boring game
  • (transportation) free relaxed ride on transit vs. hot uncomfortable crowded trains

2315 – get back to the dorms

Tuesday 08 Aug 2006

0200 – finally go to sleep
0900 – get up for class =__=
0930 – class with Jan Visser on prostitution dynamics in Dutch society

I really like the idea of socially controlling the community especially when it comes to healthcare for the sex workers. It is true that if you enforce worker checkups, the ones that are the most vulnerable will not attend for the possibility of social stigmatism/loss of job. Therefore, it makes sense that if you make the healthcare available and accessible yet strictly voluntary, there is a higher chance that more of the same population will seek the care. I wonder how often they go to these checkups. =/

1215 – yummy free lunch ^.^
1300 – walk over to Prostitution Information Center for “tour”

Apparently it’s approximately twice a year that these girls go to the clinics to get checked. It would be interesting to see how hidden these clinics are from the community.

1530 – got a stadsdeelgids (not gemeentegids) T.T at Stadhuis
1630 – walked around the nearby flea market
1800 – bought groceries & cooked dinner with Lacy/Kathy

The Spar “convenient store” has food that just as cheap as the AH, but closer! ^_^

2045 – meet Trent for jazz gigue in Casablanca Bar

Here's a vid of a bass solo. The lighting was low so you can't really see anything, but it sounds good!

Doodles from class today o( ^ _^)Q__

I just realize we're a class of doodlers today...guess who's is who's:

Have fun!

Monday 7 Aug 2006

0800 – get up =_=

0845 – meet Shilpa at courtyard to start researching around Plantage

0915 – found headquarters (HQ)/drug clinic of GGD

I find it interesting how hidden the drug clinic was within the community (there were no signs or directions in). Mind you that part of the neighborhood looks kinda sketchy, but perfectly normal people were walking in and out of the GGD HQ, which wasn't much better in announcing its presence (you can tell only by all the GGD cars/ambulances parked outside the facility). They had a large TB lab inside and I was able to get contact info of one of the coordinators within the bldg. Another thing...apparently GGD isn't a clinic/hospital nor is it for administration although I saw lots of offices at the windows. I need to research more on what healthcare services they provide.

1000 – found VLOG (a massive hospital)

This bldg. is interesting in the sense that there's only one entrance in, so we spent a good ten minutes walking around the whole block trying to find it. But it was good thing! The majority of the bldg is heavily fenced and monitored, but the single entrance was an inviting rotating door. Inside looks like any normal American hospital with more artwork/architectural design.

1030 – walked around Oosterpark

1130 – found UofA Biology Dept. nearby the Natura Arts Magistra

Come to think of it, it kinda makes sense for it to be near the zoo/aquarium. The entrance displayed beautiful bugs (scorpionflies, mantids, lacewings...) 10x larger than the ones I caught at home! <333>

1200 – came back to dorms to rest/shower

1300 - free lunch =9

1400 - Class for a LOOOOONG time

1600 - Cake break! Happy B'day Engy *<=op

1630 - more class (presentations - but we got some cool info from Miriam/Emsee today)

1930 - dinner at nearby Italian restaurant

2100 - back in dorms to watch anime/plan weekend/update blog in room with Kathy

2330 (hopefully...probably not going to happen) -_-zZ

Weekend 5-6 Aug 2006

Coming up...

Brussels

Thursday 3 Aug 06:
0900 – get up for class

0930 – class session 3 in Classroom A (EU)

12:30 – frantic packing & lunch =9

1330 – got on tour buses to Brussels

1600 – finished teaching Aaron cards to get off at hostel in Brussels

1630 – drop off stuff in hostel room (stinky bathroom >.<)

1700 – sightseeing around Grand Place – chocolates!

1900 – joint dinner with Brussels UW students in Fr. Restaurant

2200 – ran back to Grand Place for light show

2230 – light show

So beautiful especially since I love this violin concerto (my sistem plays this at home, so it kinda made me homesick, but the chocolates and waffles quickly took care of that ^_^) We just got there at the nick of time, but unfortunately, so did the rain, so we watched under our umbrellas. I actually saw the 10:30 and 11:00 shows!

2300 – found Galeries Royales St. Hubert

2400 – went back to hostel to shower/sleep

Friday 4 Aug 06:
0730 – got up
0800 – free breakfast at hostel – meager bread, but I stole some condiments!
0830 – (+ Aaron/Kathy) saw St. Michael’s Cathedral, multiple parks

This was so worth getting up early to see it and the best part was that it was FREE! ^_^V Inside had many beautiful panels of meticulously painted glass. Also, you can go down to the crypts to learn that churches during WWII were also used a barracks and strongholds during times of war.

1030 – took metro with Clifford/QT to EU parliament (not Belgium one!)
1100 – EU Parliament tour

Did anybody think that this looks really similar to where our own Congress sits or the arrangement of the UN? That would have been cool if they were in session though.

1300 – EU Commissions tour (Clifford found lunch…thx ^.^)
1600 – bus to ULB
1630 – Class session 4 on lobbying at EU
1800 – dinner with Clifford/QT/Kathy/Lacy/Aaron to have bowl of mussels!

A 600g bowl was so worth my 10 Euros. And I got full off of them too. I also mooched some of Clifford's though. They were good too! =9

1930 – last minute shopping at Grand Place
2130 – bus back to Amsterdam

Tuesday 2 Aug 06

0730 – got up =_=
0900 – got to the Anne Frank Museum (~30min walk) w/ Kathy/Shilpa

0930 – finally got into museum

Secret Bookcase
I secretly snapped this artsy-looking picture of somebody entering the secret bookcase that led to the secret annex where Anne Frank and her family/friend hid from the Nazi regime. This museum as a melancholy feel as all museums remembering this time in history (not as depressing as the Holocaust Musuem in NY, as I believe), but you feel like you're stepping back in time where you can stand face to face with the relics of the past. People should really check out the museum, but go early (~8:45) or late (~18:15) or the lines are really long and are not fun to wait in the rain like we did ='(

1030 – left museum to head back
1130 – preliminary research (establish more connections via email/phone)
1230 – free lunch =9
1315 – took bus (34) to ISHSS-VKS

Paul Wouter's Lecture at VKS
The idea behind ISHSS is a somewhat noble one to preserve documents from social revolutions that may/may not align with the major movements. As a believer of the idea that "history is written by the winners," I think it's important to also collect and study alternative POV's - how they initiate and carry out in history. I also liked how we also got tea/coffee right before his talk! ^_^

1400 – class session 2 @ VKS
1745 – stopped to take pic of windmill
1830 – met class to take bus to dinner (Ital. restaurant)

2000 – finally got some food O_O
2200 – walked around red light district (not a crazy as I thought it would be, but maybe because it was heavily raining too)
2230 – got too rainy & headed home

Saturday, August 05, 2006

Tuesday 1 Aug 06

0830 – get up and shower
0930 – class session 1
1300 – free lunch at dorms =9 (stole a banana)
1400 – headed to Amsterdam Historical Museum (long tour)
1730 – headed to dinner at Dam Square
1900 – tried the Anne Frank Museum (too long of lines)
2000 – watched street performer at Dam Square
2130 – came back to dorms, email/chat/shower
2400 - sleep

Amazing, this is the fastest I've ever gotten over jetlag! ^_^V The bathroom still smells pretty bad (apparently everybody's does...is that a trend in Europe?) The lecture on Dutch tolerance was interesting to see that they really aren't more tolerant, but manipulate their laws to compartmentalize it. I really loved the museum (art class means I knew some of the painting). We also found the exhibit of Rembrandt and Anne Frank's letters (I think we accidently snuck in, me and Shilpa) <(^_ ^;) But I snuck a pic (w/o flash) of Rembrandt's famous dissection paintings! Later on, we tried to go to the Ann Frank Museum later, but we still found the lines rather long (Rick Steve lies!) so I guess we'll get up early tomorrow (If I have any remnant of jet lag...this shouldn't be too hard) Instead, we just went to Dam Square to watch a magician who was neurotic about the placement of his audience (?_?) I was slightly taken aback to see the New Church be used as a fashion show location, but that was a good example that religion is not as popular here.

Monday 31 Jul 06

0715 – plane landed, but we had to wait for the plane to taxi and the police to come on and arrest some unruly passengers
0800 – finally got off the plane, got bags, passed thru customs (no one was there)
0930 – reached dorm rooms after taxi from central station (expensive)…place looks kinda ghetto =/
1030 – met ppl at nearby groceries – bought water
1300 – free lunch at dorms =9
1400 – orientation -_-zZ
1630 – dinner at Thai restaurant w/ ppl near Chinatown
1900 – fell asleep

The grocery store was a big surprise to me to find out how bad their milk can get because of less stringent pasturization requirements. On the other hand, good bread! I found a grill in my room, so I'll need to get some bread later on (note to self). I had a "great time" trying to get money because I previously called my bank and they said I could pull on $500 (494 Euros) at once...apparently I can only get 200 Euros. The dinner was another amusing event as we learned that you can't order tap water and you have go find your servers to get anything (we jsut ended up getting our own rice) O_O We'll see if I can quickly get over jet lag, but its a miracle that I could stay up all day.

Research Updates in Amsterdam

blah...nothing in Amsterdam. I need to go to Utrecht for a day! >.<
